Local History and Trivia

The landscape our village is built on was shaped in the last Ice Age, creating all our lakes and wetlands. The Potawatomi people thrived here through a mix of farming, hunting, and fishing, and the fertile soil eventually drew European settlers. Early settlers, like Noer Potter from Pennsylvania, and others from Scottish, German, and English backgrounds, found their way here from the east coast.

The path to incorporation began in November 1956 when the village filed its incorporation papers under the guidance of Lake County Judge Minard Hulse. Just a month later, in December 1956, Lindenhurst held its first election with a remarkable 90% voter turnout. The village’s official incorporation date is January 16, 1957, marking a significant milestone in local history.

Lee R. Lewis served as the village’s first president, with board meetings even held on Saturdays to accommodate the commuting members. Those early days saw dedicated efforts, including fundraisers such as dances, to fund essentials like stationery and record books. In April 1957, a new election was held as mandated by law, and Robert Randall assumed the role of president. His tenure marked notable achievements, including the passage of ordinances and zoning laws, road maintenance, snow removal, and the introduction of police patrols.
